RunDisney: 5 Things I Wish I Knew Before My First Race

When I laced up my sneakers for the 2018 Princess Challenge, I had no idea that race morning would be the start of something magical. That first RunDisney race was equal parts exciting, overwhelming, and unforgettable — but oh, if only I had known a few things ahead of time!

If you're gearing up for your for your first RunDisney event let me share five things I wish I knew back then.

1. The Early Wake-Up is No Joke

I thought I was prepared. I mean, I get up early all the time. But setting an alarm for 2:30 a.m.? That’s a whole different world. RunDisney races start early — as in pre-sunrise early — and you need time to get dressed, eat, and make your way to the corrals.

Tip: Lay everything out the night before (costume, bib, shoes, fuel). Consider a mini breakfast you can eat in the room or while waiting in the start area. Bring something warm to wear in the corrals. You’ll thank yourself at 4:00 a.m.

2. The Costumes Are a Whole Vibe

I had a cute running outfit — but then I got to the start line and was surrounded by full-blown Belle ballgowns, Ariel tutus, and even Lumière-shaped hats. It’s not required to dress up, but it sure adds to the fun.

Tip: If you love dressing up, go for it! Just test your outfit ahead of time to make sure it’s comfortable to run in. And if costumes aren’t your thing? A themed shirt or skirt still brings the magic. I love my Cricut!

3. The Corrals Move Fast… Until They Don’t

RunDisney corrals are their own beast. There’s music, dancing, fireworks (yes, for every corral), and then… a whole lot of waiting.

Tip: Enjoy the experience! Talk to people in your corral, soak in the entertainment, and remember — this is more about the journey than the finish time.

4. The Characters Are Worth It

I skipped the character stops during that first race because I was worried about my pace and didn’t want to wait in line. Looking back? I totally regret it. Seeing your favorite character in the middle of a Disney park? It’s not your average experience.

Tip: If you see a character you love, stop. You’re not here for a personal record — you’re here for memories. Plus, the lines usually move faster than you think.

5. It’s an Entire Experience

I was blown away by the energy. The volunteers, the music, the other runners cheering each other on, the magical sunrise over Epcot — it was unlike anything else. My only regret? Not taking it all in. I was too focused on “doing it right” to enjoy just being there.

Tip: Take pictures, take your time, take it all in. That first race is special — and it’s the beginning of a beautiful addiction (trust me, I’ve done a few more since).

Final Thoughts

That 2018 Princess Challenge changed my life. It wasn’t just about crossing the finish line — it was about becoming part of a community, stepping into a magical story, and realizing I could do hard things.

If you're getting ready for your first RunDisney race....... you've got this. Wear what makes you happy, stop for characters, and don’t forget to smile for the camera.
